Not only do our eyes notice color contrasts, but a large part of what we notice too are texture differences. When planting a flower bed, look for differences such as smooth and shiny leaves, soft, matte-textures, rigid, etc. Together, they compliment each other forming a texture palate.

Repeating the same or similar colors in your plants allows the colors to play off each other. Planting trees with deep burgundy leaves, and planting smaller bushes with mulch that have varying shades of this color, makes them all stand out.
